The fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance, with the world watching. US and Ukrainian negotiators have made a bold statement, asserting that the path to peace is in Russia's hands. But is it that simple?
On Friday, top negotiators from the US and Ukraine revealed they had productive talks on ending the devastating war in Ukraine. However, they emphasized that Russia holds the key to any meaningful progress.
In a joint statement, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, alongside Ukrainian negotiators, stated, "For any agreement to truly advance, Russia must demonstrate a genuine dedication to lasting peace. This includes taking tangible steps to reduce tensions and put an end to the bloodshed."
The negotiators agreed on a security framework and delved into deterrence measures during their meeting. Yet, the talks in Moscow earlier this week failed to yield a breakthrough in the nearly four-year-long war.
The sixth round of negotiations in two weeks was held between Witkoff, Kushner, Ukraine's Rustem Umerov, and Brig Gen Andriy Hnatov. This two-day meeting concluded with a unified message: Ukraine's primary goal is to secure an agreement that safeguards its independence, protects its citizens, and paves the way for a thriving democratic future.
The statement also referenced the recent US-Russia summit, where President Vladimir Putin was in attendance. Additionally, they discussed Ukraine's post-war vision, encompassing the country's reconstruction and economic collaboration with the US.
A ceasefire and de-escalation are crucial, they argued, to prevent further aggression and allow Ukraine's ambitious redevelopment plan to transform the nation into an even stronger and more prosperous one post-war.
However, significant obstacles persist. Moscow and Kyiv remain at odds over the status of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian forces and the provision of security assurances for Ukraine.
The Moscow negotiations, which included a five-hour session between Witkoff and Putin, were deemed unsuccessful by the Kremlin, with no compromise reached. Jared Kushner, a prominent businessman and advisor to President Trump, was also present.
President Trump cautiously described the talks as "reasonably good", but remained non-committal about their outcome. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged that negotiations must be supported by international pressure on Russia.
