Team GB is gearing up for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina with an ambitious goal: to break their own record for the most medals won at a single Winter Games. This bold target of eight medals is a significant leap from their previous best of five, achieved in Sochi and Pyeongchang. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 affected Beijing Games, where they secured only two curling medals, Team GB is confident in their ability to excel in Italy. Dr. Kate Baker, Director of Performance and People at UK Sport, expressed optimism, stating, 'We are in the strongest position we've ever been going into a Games from a world championship performance perspective.'
The team's confidence is well-founded, with several athletes poised for success. Mia Brookes, the 2023 snowboard slopestyle world champion, and Zoe Atkin, the 2025 freeski halfpipe world champion, are among the standout performers. Kirsty Muir in freeski slopestyle and big air, and Charlotte Bankes in snowboard cross, also have legitimate medal chances. Baker highlighted the 'incredible array of female athletes on snow' who are 'pulling extraordinary things out of the bag.'
In addition to the women's athletes, the men's team is also strong. Matt Weston has consistently topped the rankings in men's skeleton, while his teammate Marcus Wyatt sits fourth. The men's curling team, led by Bruce Mouat, is considered 'rock stars' and favorites for the gold medal. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson aim to win Britain's first figure skating Olympic medal since 1994, following their bronze medal at the world championships last year.
Despite the higher risk associated with winter sports, Baker believes the team should approach the Games with optimism.
