SpaceX is gearing up for another ambitious launch, with Starship Flight 13 set to take off as early as July 16. This mission comes on the heels of a recent setback during Flight 12, where a sequence change in the engines led to a 90-degree error in the Super Heavy's orientation and the failure of five engines to relight. Despite these challenges, SpaceX is optimistic about the upcoming launch, aiming to validate the upgrades made to the Starship 'Version 3' (V3) design.
The V3 is a significant improvement over previous versions, with a focus on reusability and enhanced power. Unlike SpaceX's Falcon 9, which can land on coastal zones or droneships, the Starship and its Super Heavy counterpart are designed for a more complex return to the launch site, utilizing 'Mechazilla' tower arms to catch the stages mid-air. While SpaceX has successfully recovered Super Heavy stages in the past, the V3 hardware presented a unique challenge during Flight 12, leading to a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico rather than a planned touchdown.
The upcoming Flight 13 will attempt to address these issues and demonstrate the improved capabilities of the V3. One of the key objectives is the successful launch and separation of the Super Heavy from the Ship upper stage, followed by a boostback burn and a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, SpaceX plans to deploy 20 Starlink V3 satellites, equipped with cameras for heatshield inspections, and attempt the in-space relight of one of the spacecraft's Raptor engines.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cleared SpaceX's corrective actions, paving the way for the launch. If successful, SpaceX aims to recover the Starship V3 stages back at its Starbase, Texas, launch site during Flight 14. However, the road to full operational status is still fraught with challenges, including stable orbit launches, successful spacecraft docking, and cryogenic fuel management in zero-gravity environments.
Despite the tight timeline, SpaceX is confident in its ability to meet these goals within the year. NASA has contracted Starship for lunar lander missions, with a crew-capable version expected by 2028 for the Artemis program. The company's ambitious plans include a boilerplate Starship V3 for the 2027 Artemis III mission, marking a significant step towards the commercialization of space travel and exploration.
