Ricky Gervais: A Comedian's Journey and the Power of Real-Life Stories
In a recent interview, Ricky Gervais, the renowned comedian and creator of iconic shows like The Office and After Life, shared an insightful story about his writing epiphany. Gervais revealed that his comic voice was shaped by an English teacher who challenged him to write about real life, a lesson that would profoundly impact his career.
But here's where it gets controversial... Gervais, in his own words, says he's now the only group that can be mocked without consequence. He argues that classism is a power struggle often overlooked, and that the working class is unfairly ridiculed without backlash.
As a young student, Gervais had a unique perspective on storytelling. His teacher, Mr. Taylor, encouraged him to write about his own experiences, a suggestion that initially met resistance. Gervais's stories, inspired by TV shows like Starsky & Hutch, were deemed too melodramatic. However, a turning point came when he wrote about his mother's simple act of kindness towards an elderly neighbor.
"I thought, 'Ah, I'll show my teacher', so I tried to write the most boring story possible about my mum cleaning up after an old lady," Gervais recalled. To his surprise, this ordinary tale earned him an 'A', proving that writing about what one knows can be powerful.
Gervais's work often draws from his own life and experiences. Many of his biggest hits, like The Office and After Life, are set close to his childhood home, allowing him to infuse his work with realism. He believes that drawing on personal mannerisms is easier than putting on an act, as he only deals in realism.
"You can be watching the greatest movie ever on TV, but if you hear a siren, your neighbor being taken away, you're at the window because it's more interesting, because it affects you," he explained.
Gervais, the youngest of four children from a working-class family, didn't realize his family's financial struggles until he arrived at University College London. There, he noticed the stark contrast in speech and mannerisms between himself and his peers.
He believes that British sitcoms, including his own work, are often about class and the power dynamics that come with it. Gervais argues that classism is a form of discrimination that is often overlooked and accepted, unlike racism, homophobia, or misogyny.
"People understand most power struggles... It's the one thing that it seems to be fine to take the mickey out of with no blowback at all," he said.
Gervais's comments on classism have sparked debate. Some critics have accused him of making fun of disadvantaged groups in his jokes. He acknowledges that his work may have evolved over time and that he might approach certain sketches differently now. However, he stands by his work, believing that art is a product of its time.
"Do I regret anything? No. Would I do things differently now? Probably," Gervais said, leaving room for interpretation and discussion.
Despite his success and Golden Globe nomination, Gervais values his quiet life. He struggles with fame and prefers the comfort of his couch, cat, and girlfriend, author Jane Fallon, watching Netflix.
"I love the work, I love writing, I love creating, I love stand-up, but all the other stuff I could really do without," he shared.
