Pop Star Condemns White House's Use of Her Song in Military Video
Grammy-nominated singer Kesha has taken a strong stance against the White House's use of her song in a controversial video. The 30-second clip, titled 'Lethality', was posted on TikTok and features graphic military imagery, including a jet launching a missile into a ship that explodes. Kesha's 2011 hit 'Blow' was used to soundtrack this violent scene, which she believes is being used to incite violence and threaten war.
In a social media post, Kesha expressed her disapproval, stating, 'Trying to make light of war is disgusting and inhumane. I absolutely do NOT approve of my music being used to promote violence of any kind. Love always trumps hate.' She further emphasized her disapproval, saying, 'This show of blatant disregard for human life and quite frankly this attack on all of our nervous systems is the opposite of what I stand for.'
The singer also criticized the president's diversion tactics, drawing attention to the presence of former President Donald Trump in the White House files. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung responded, suggesting that their use of popular music is a strategic move to drive traffic to MAGA videos. Kesha then simply posted a message on her X account, 'Stop using my music, perverts @WhiteHouse'.
This is not the first time musicians have taken issue with the Trump administration's unauthorized use of their music. Radiohead and Olivia Rodrigo have also spoken out against the use of their songs in ICE promotional videos, demanding that the content be taken down. Kesha's reaction highlights the ethical concerns surrounding the use of music in sensitive and controversial contexts.
