In a bold move that promises to reshape the landscape of industrial heritage, Kengo Kuma and Associates has announced an ambitious project to renovate and expand the Michelin Adventure museum located in Clermont-Ferrand, France. This interactive museum, situated within a former Michelin manufacturing site, first opened its doors in 2009 and is now set for a significant update as part of a broader revitalization effort in the company's manufacturing district known as the Quartier des Pistes.
The architectural firm has been entrusted with the task of modernizing and enlarging the museum's distinctive structure, characterized by its iconic sawtooth roof. A key aspect of the renovation will be the preservation of the existing metal frame while introducing a new timber framework designed to maintain the impressive 30-meter span of the building.
Kengo Kuma and Associates emphasized the importance of engineering at Michelin, stating, "The existing building will be completely stripped, retaining only its metallic structure. Engineering lies at the heart of Michelin, and bold technical expression is both essential and intentional." They further explained that the new timber structural system would be developed within the existing grid, harmonizing with the rhythm of the metal framework to ensure the museum retains its open and inviting atmosphere.
Visual representations of the revamped 5,980-square-meter museum showcase how the metal structure will be rejuvenated with expansive glass openings, all while being nestled alongside concrete test tracks surrounded by lush greenery. One of the standout features will be the south facade, where the angular corrugated roof will be extended with new metal canopies, creating sheltered external walkways that lead visitors into the interior.
The exterior design will feature a juxtaposition of materials, with an exposed timber frame complemented by hempcrete infill and finished with a lime-concrete surface. The studio outlined, "The facade is composed of vertical elements set between solid timber columns spaced at 1.95-meter intervals. Through a process of imprinting, these elements reinterpret the profiles of corrugated metal roof sheeting, giving the facade a distinctly industrial character."
Inside the Michelin Adventure museum, visitors will find a spacious hall that houses a circular exhibition area at its center, with additional facilities such as a shop, event space, offices, and a café located around the perimeter. The renderings depict a bright and airy interior adorned with wooden accents and sleek grey-toned floors and walls, creating a welcoming environment.
New design features also include expansive glazing on the eastern side of the building, showcasing a striking six-meter-tall sculpture that resembles the brand's beloved Bibendum figure. This artistic touch adds a playful yet sophisticated element to the museum's ambiance.
In other notable architectural developments, Kazunari Sakamoto has recently designed an art library for Chanel in Shanghai, and ZAO/standardarchitecture has created a concrete art gallery centered around a courtyard in China. These projects reflect the ongoing evolution of contemporary architecture, where innovation meets functionality in engaging ways.
